The Beatles Project began on the second-to-last day of 2006 with a jam session in front of scattered lunchtime diners in the back of a restaurant operated by a friend. Since this rather random sample of the general public who just happened to be there for the food wanted more—music, that is—the group thought well maybe there’s something here for others to enjoy.
Overcoming work schedules, geographical distance and equipment dilemmas the group carried on at a rehearsal studio which they dubbed "Shabby Road."
It was decided that if this project paying tribute to the Beatles’ music by playing it as they would have performed it were to get off the ground that it should benefit non-profits--mainly the arts and music--by generating funds from performances for these concerns.
Since none of the members experienced the appearance of a little man on a flaming pie to declare, "You shall be so named," (as went John Lennon’s account of the origin of their name) the new band considered many names; but none seemed to fit the bill.
After referring to the musical effort as "the project" for a number of months, it was decided that Beatles Project was likely the most representative, descriptive, and identifying moniker the group could have.
In August of 2006 the band was ready to break out of the "Shab" and try its act on a real audience. So they played unannounced to a favorable response at the Hot August Nights Car Show sponsored by Oldies 97.5. "Yea!" said the auto enthusiasts.
The next step was an invitation-only show at the Mainzer Theater in Merced.
Encouraged at the Mainzer by a packed house clapping and singing along and the subsequent buzz generated by the show, the Beatles Project was officially launched.
Since the Mainzer event, the group continues to be well received performing concerts to benefit Tag Buster, which is part of the greater Merced Community Action Network, as well as The Merced Theater Foundation, Performing Arts, and School Instrument Funds.
The members of the Beatles Project feel very fortunate to have folks such as you that join with them in the positive experience of timeless music performed live.
